
A highlight of the festival week is new music, and the Composers Workshop is a major source for premieres. Selected through a competitive, adjudicated application process, these composers and their music represent the best and brightest talent writing for trombone today. Their works will be interspersed on programs throughout the week, and also featured in two Saturday recitals.

Brandon Mirvil, Chrome Heart for Bass Trombone and Piano
Brandon Mirvil is a 21 year old Haitian-American musician born and raised in Miami, Fl. He comes from a family of musicians with his three older brothers learning in the marching band, and his parents playing for their church. He saw his oldest brother play trombone when he was a child and instantly drew a liking to it. He started pursuing the trombone seriously in the 6th grade, his skillset grew in highschool where he went to Miami Arts Charter. He received achievements for the jazz band and won the concerto competition in senior year as well as making the Florida all-state band the same year. In his pursuit of college he got into the University of Miami through his trombone skills receiving a presidential music scholarship. In between his path of performing on the Trombone he found other passions of Producing and Composing his own music. He is now a music composition major working to pursue his dream of scoring music for film and tv shows.

Ben Morris, If You Give a Moose a Muffin for Baritone voice, bass trombone, and contrabass
Ben Morris is a composer and jazz pianist whose work tells unconventional stories and crosses genre boundaries. His projects include music for chamber groups and largeensembles, operas, theater and film scores, and multimedia works. He recently lived in Oslo on a Fulbright Grant and received an American-Scandinavian Foundation Grant tostudy the influence of folk music on Norwegian jazz. Ben’s 2022 debut album, PocketGuides, takes elements from Norwegian folk music, jazz, and chamber music. The musicon Pocket Guides garnered Ben two Downbeat Awards, two ASCAP Herb AlpertAwards and a Morton Gould Award, a commission from New York Youth Symphony’sFirst Music, and an invitation to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival.
A versatile film, theatre, and opera composer, Ben scored the feature documentary filmsAmerican River, which premiered at Montclair Film in 2021, and Saving the Great Swamp:The Battle to Defeat the Jetport. Ben is a frequent collaborator of librettist Laura Fuentes;his projects with Laura include Las Auténticas, a 20-minute opera for the WashingtonNational Opera American Opera Initiative, The Fall of Man and Other Tales, a multimediawork for the ATLAS B2 Black Box, Colorado Sky, a shadow puppet opera incollaboration with Sohap Ensemble and Art Song Colorado, and The Rip Van Winkles, ayouth opera commissioned by The Glimmerglass Festival.

Dayla Spencer, Abstract for trombone octet
Dayla Spencer (born 2005) is a trombonist and composer from Nashville, TN. She began composing in May 2022 under the instruction of classical composer Cristina Spinei, and still studies with her to this day. In addition to being accepted into the Interlochen Arts Camp for 2023, she is scheduled to have her wind ensemble piece "Finale in Eb" premiered at Belmont University in May 2023, as well as the premiere of a movement of her string quartet piece, "III. Navy Blue", at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens in Nashville in late February. Spencer studies trombone under Vanderbilt University professor Nick Laufer and is involved in various ensembles as a trombonist, including being the assistant principal trombonist of Vanderbilt's Curb Youth Symphony and principal trombonist of the Belmont Academy Youth Wind Ensemble. She was recently chosen as 2nd trombonist for the National Pathways Festival Orchestra, which will convene in Cincinnati, Ohio in mid-March 2023. When she isn't composing or playing trombone, Spencer plays junior varsity ice hockey with Brentwood Academy and is an ambassador for the Hockey Players of Color (HPOC) organization. She plans to major in music composition in college while continuing her studies on trombone.

Shao Suan LOW, Sunrise over the Rockies for Tenor Trombone and Piano for
Shao Suan LOW is an award-winning pianist, composer and songwriter fromSingapore. As a pianist, she has also won prizes in competitions such as 1stPrize at the Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche Competition (France) and 3rd Prize at theInternational Competition of U.F.A.M. (France) for solo piano. She hasperformed numerous times as a two-piano soloist with the Singapore SymphonyOrchestra (SSO) and recorded an album with the orchestra featuring Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals”.
As an active piano collaborator, Shao Suan has collaborated with well-respectedmusicians from all over the world such as double bassist Jeff Bradetich, flautistDavide Formisano, trumpeter Joe Burgstaller, trombonist Jörgen van Rijen, andtubist Øystein Baadsvik, just to name a few.As an avid composer and songwriter, Shao Suan’s pop songs have been sung byAsian pop singers such as Vivian Hsu (Taiwan), Mink (Korea/Japan) and ChenYi Yi (Malaysia).

Jacob Beranek, Exsultet for trombone, piano
Jacob Beranek (b. 1998) is an American composer of classical music rooted in melody,craft, rhythmic vitality, and historical traditions. Beranek served as Composer-in-Residence of theMidsummer’s Music Festival (2017–20), and has also been championed by the ALIAS ChamberEnsemble, Blair Brass Quintet, Blair String Quartet, Gesualdo Six, Juilliard Orchestra, WisconsinPhilharmonic, choreographers Sidra Bell and Kannen Glanz, and soloists Peter Sheppard Skærvedand Mimi Stillman. A dedicated scholar of Czech music, Beranek was honored by the AmericanAmbassador to Czechia in 2018 during a performance of his music in Prague Castle.Beranek received his B.M. in Composition from Vanderbilt University (2021), his M.M. inComposition from The Juilliard School (2023), and is currently pursuing his doctorate as a student ofJohn Corigliano at Juilliard. TODD GOODMAN (b. 1977) is a prominent figure in the contemporary classical music scene, pushing the boundaries of the genre with his unique style and vision. His music is performed and recorded around the globe by musicians of all levels—including, world-renowned soloists, top-tier professional ensembles, academic ensembles, and learners of all ages. Dr. Goodman has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants, commissions, andhonors from organizations such as the American Prize, the British Trombone Society, theInternational Tuba Euphonium Association, the National Endowment for the Arts, NewMusic America, and many others. As an advocate for arts education, Goodman has served forover two decades in various compositional and educational residencies with orchestras, operacompanies, performing arts centers, and academic institutions around the United States, andwas a nominee for the very first Educator of the Year GrammyTM Award.

David Miller (b. 2004) went to high school at South Williamsport Jr./Sr. High School inSouth Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is currently a sophomore at Ithaca College inIthaca, New York, where he studies with Dr. Jorge Grossman, Professor of MusicTheory, History, and Composition, and Dr. Evis Sammoutis, Associate Professor ofMusic Theory, History, and Composition. In the past he has studied composition withDr. Patrick Long, Associate Professor of Theory, Composition, and Music Technology atSusquehanna University and Dr. Rodrigo Bussad, Lecturer in Music Composition. Hewas selected to have a piece premiered in the Outstanding Composition session at the2022 PMEA All-State Festival.He was also the winner of the International TromboneAssociation 50th Anniversary Fanfare Competition.

Daniel Karcher, Atanos Enobmort for Tenor Trombone and Electronics
Daniel Karcher is a composer and educator residing in Georgia. Both his electronic and acoustic music can vary drastically from piece to piece, but often contains experimental elements, spatial textures, and a fondness for long-term gestural development. He recently graduated from the University of Georgia and has earned previous degrees from the University of Miami and Oberlin Conservatory. As an artist, he views his role as that of an explorer, discovering new patterns of ideas, sonic frontiers, and atmospheric landscapes to then share with listeners. Aside from composing, his musical interests include discussing aesthetics, playing viola among friends, and analyzing video game soundtracks, text scores, and indeterminate music.

Evan Fontaine, Over Yonder for Trombone Quartet
Evan Fontaine (b. 2000) is a composer, vocalist, and saxophonist from Greenfield, IN. He graduated from Indiana University with a BM in Composition and, during his time there, studied with Felipe Tovar-Henao, Don Freund, PQ Phan, Aaron Travers, Andreia Pinto-Correia, and Han Lash. His work has been performed by such artists as Nick Photinos, PRISM Quartet, and Haven Trio. While Evan specializes in vocal and saxophone music, his reach extends to the worlds of electronics and the marching arts. His palette often blends various musical idioms and blurs the boundaries between the sentimental and the satirical. This often manifests in tandem with other disciplines, like visual media and poetry, all with the express purpose of activating the listener's most complex emotions, memories, and imaginations.

Kyle Skinner, Fanfare for Trombone Octet
Kyle Skinner is a composer, playwright, and percussionist based out of Plano, Texas. In training under Mr. Jon Lee, he has received prime instruction and has received high marks at both Regional and State competitions for solo marimba. As a composer he studies with Dr. Lane Harder and has had works premiered by high quality ensembles, such as the Plano East Senior High School Wind Ensemble. His piece, "dusk in the midst," has been described as "evocative of so much sadness and struggle and finally, some measure of empowerment and realized self-identity." His pieces can range from being didactic, like “dusk in the midst,” or being simply self-expressions, like “i view our love as lavender.”

Johnny Danziger, Orbicularis Oris for trombone octet
Johnny Danziger is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from East Lansing, Michigan. He studies Music Education at Michigan State University, and plays Bass Trombone with the Spartan Marching Band, and Concert Band. His plans for the future is to become a collegiate band director/marching band director. A thrilling fast and fierce piece, Orbicularis Oris has many loud crunchy chords that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It is named after the muscle that controls your lips, which is hopefully still there after playing. Enjoy!

Dave Slonaker, Dichotomy for Solo Tenor Trombone, Solo Bass Trombone, and 10-piece Trombone Choir
Dave Slonaker has been a composer, arranger, and orchestrator in Hollywood for over 36 years. He has arranged and orchestrated for many popular films including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Justice League, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Oz the Great and Powerful, Alice in Wonderland, Spider-Man, Night at the Museum, AirForce One, Sleepy Hollow, and The Mummy Returns, as well as composed and arranged for TV and animation. Equally at home in all styles of music, he formed the Dave Slonaker Big Band in 2012 to perform his jazz compositions and arrangements, gaining a GRAMMY® nomination in 2013 for his album, Intrada. His music has also been performed by Clark Terry, Woody Shaw, and the Woody Herman, and Count Basie Jazz Orchestras.
